Blood Flow Restriction “BFR” is the application of a monitored tourniquet system to an extremity, which is inflated, to an individualized and specific pressure to reduce blood flow to an exercising extremity. The therapy is short at first for simple exercises but can last up to 30 minutes based on the pt’s tolerance and the specific protocol. Typically, to increase strength gains a person would need to lift a significant amount of resistance (60% of a one rep max or higher). With BFR you can create considerable strength and muscle hypertrophy with resistance as low as 20% one rep max.
BFR is a great tool to use post-surgically and for patients who suffer from chronic symptoms. BFR allows you to make significant strength gains while loading your system with minimal resistance.
